2026-03-10

Berekum, Bono Region – March 6, 2026

The Berekum East Municipality joined the rest of the nation in grand style to commemorate Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary, under the distinguished leadership of the Honourable Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hajia Fati Abubakar (also known as Hajia Fatima Binta Abubakar).

The MCE, together with municipal assembly officials, traditional authorities, security services, school children, and residents, participated actively in the official Independence Day parade and related activities held at the Berekum Central Park and other designated venues across the municipality.

Highlights of the Celebration

Hon. Hajia Fati Abubakar inspected the parade contingents comprising basic and second-cycle schools, security agencies, and civil society groups. She delivered an inspiring address to the large gathering, urging residents to reflect on the sacrifices of Ghana’s forefathers and to renew their commitment to nation-building.

On this historic day, we remember the courage and vision of our founding fathers who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. As a municipality, we must channel this spirit of independence into hard work, unity, and innovation to restore Berekum to its glorious past as the Golden City. Together, we can build a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous Berekum for all, the MCE stated.

As part of the celebration, the MCE’s administration:

  • Organized a massive clean-up exercise in the lead-up to March 6.
  • Donated essential items to support vulnerable groups and faith-based communities.
  • Awarded deserving schools and individuals for excellent performance in academics and patriotism.
  • Engaged the youth through cultural displays, traditional dances, and educational talks on Ghana’s history.

The event witnessed a massive turnout of residents, reflecting strong community support for the new leadership.

Significance of the Event

This year’s Independence Day celebration under Hon. Hajia Fati Abubakar’s tenure highlighted themes of unity in diversity, patriotism, and collective development. As a Muslim leader actively engaging both Christian and Muslim communities, the MCE continues to promote religious tolerance and inclusive governance.

The celebration also served as a platform for the MCE to outline key priorities of her administration, including improved road networks, sanitation, education, and economic empowerment for the people of Berekum East.

Church leaders, Imams, traditional rulers (Nananom), and political stakeholders all commended the MCE for her hands-on approach and commitment to restoring the municipality’s pride of place.

The day ended on a high note with a grand durbar, cultural performances, and a call for continued prayers for Ghana’s progress.

Long live Berekum East Municipality! Long live Bono Region! Long live Ghana!
